These lyrics are adapted from the poem by Rabbi Israel Najara, a 15th-Century mystic poet from Sefad, Israel. This piyut is a love song describing the love between the groom and the bride. The bride is referred to here as Ya’ala. It has been set to music many times and is widely sung among the Jewish communities of North Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East. It is traditional to sing this text at occasions such as the birth of a daughter or at a Bat-Mitzvah celebration, or as part of the Baqashot prayers sung in several Moroccan communities. Jaffa Road has created new original music for these centuries-old lyrics.
